A new Stanley Hastings

Stanley Hastings, aspiring actor/ writer, and licensed private investigator in New York, isn’t very good at his paid vocation. With the begrudging help of his wife Alice and Sergeant MacAuliff of the NYC Police, the cowardly, kvetching, self-deprecating Stanley stumbles into solutions in a series of tributes to the power of relentless mediocrity.  In his latest Safari (Pegasus Crime, 11/2014), Stanley and Alice are on safari in Africa. Stanley is alert enough to realize that the staff member found dead under a tree of sausage fruit has not perished by accident. Fearing for his business, the tour operator asks Stanley to investigate.  A wonderfully comic send-up of the hard-boiled PI.  Parnell Hall also writes the Puzzle Lady mystery series.

Theresa MacLean, forensic series

Lisa Black has added a seventh book to her popular Theresa MacLean series.  In Close to the Bone (Severn, 2014), Theresa stumbles into a dead body as she enters the Medical Examiner’s Office late one night.  Theresa is a  forensic scientist working in Cleveland.  She is a divorced, single-mom with one daughter, Rachel, whom we see growing up as this series of fast-paced thrillers progresses.  Lisa Black, herself, is an experienced  crime scene investigator and a former forensic scientist for the Cleveland coroner’s office.  She has also written a pair of mysteries under the pseudonym Elizabeth Becka (q.v.).

Chris Honneysett

If you like your mysteries very British, try Peter Helton’s series about Chris Honeysett of Bath, England. Chris is an artist and a private investigator, owner of the Aqua Investigations agency. He lives in a cottage just outside Bath with his girlfriend artist Annis Jordan. His friend and ex-safecracker, Tim Bigwood, lends his assistance from time to time investigating a variety of cases from kidnapping to murder. These classy and comic sleuths may just be your cup of tea. Author Peter Helton brings his native Bath vividly to life. In his latest book Indelible (Severn, 10/2014), Chris is arranging an art exhibit at the Bath Art Academy when murder strikes.
